Vehicles on the road today have only one large battery. It is usually located in the engine compartment, although some manufacturers like Volvo have the Primary battery in the trunk.
Description & Operation
Provides the electricity needed to turn over the engine. All other current generated during operation to power the radio, windows, Interior lighting and other accessories come from the alternator.
However, some vehicles have more than one battery. High levels of specification, and new electronic driver aids may feature an auxiliary battery alongside the main vehicle starter battery. These are used to power other systems on the car that require standard vehicle current, where the alternator cannot access. In these cases, the alternator is responsible for charging both the primary and the auxiliary battery. The main battery provides the bulk power during engine turn over, and the auxiliary battery feeds some or most of the car accessories.
Like all batteries, auxiliary batteries will eventually reach their maximum life span. At that moment they'll need to be replaced.

- Auxiliary batteries can be checked during maintenance.
- Auxiliary battery failure generally allows you to continue driving, but issues will arise such as accessory functions not working.
- There is a sea of possibilities when it comes to battery location, price and size which typically vary from one manufacturer to another.
Steps Required:
- The Auxiliary battery is tested and if does not pass standards will need to be replaced. Vehicle trim is removed as needed for accessing this usually well hidden battery.
- The failed and or failing Auxiliary battery is disconnected and removed.
- The battery connections are cleaned Simultaneously as the new Auxiliary battery is secured, and connected.
- The trim panels that were removed for access are reinstalled. The Auxiliary battery is re-verified.
- Then, dashboard messages need to be erased and in some cases can only be done with Diagnostic Equipment.
- The Auxiliary battery circuit is tested for a final check ensuring proper operation.
Tips on Service Recommendation:
Dependant on vehicle operation, the battery deteriorates over time needing replacement. Most major brands have a lifespan of about four (4) to six (6) years, but longevity will be based on how cold and unsheltered the environment may or may not be. Once your auxiliary battery fails, it puts a strain on the rest of your vehicles operations, and some of your accessories such as lights or wipers and infotainment systems may operate at half capacity or not at all.
